I have a nice email address through my hosting provider, but I hate their webmail. Can I check my email in Gmail?
Yes! In order to do this, you will need to know your email username (it is almost always the full email address itself), password, and the POP server. The POP server is sometimes mail.yourdomainnamehere.com – for example, if your email address is john@tacos.com, frequently the username will be john@tacos.com and the POP server will be mail.tacos.com. Or it might just be tacos.com. Or it might be something weird.
I recommend using SSL settings, which should be provided by whoever is providing your email.
- Login to Gmail
- Up in the top right-hand corner, click on the icon of a gear and click on Settings.
- Click on the Accounts and Import link at the top.
- Next to Check mail from other accounts, click on Add a mail account. A new window will pop up.
- Enter the email address and click on Next.
- Leave it set to “Import emails from my other account (POP3)”. Click Next.
- Enter the email username (frequently the full email address).
- Enter the password for that email address.
- Enter the POP server (usually mail.yourdomainnamehere.com)
- Select a Port — this will usually be 995 but your email host should provide this info
- Check the box next to Always use a secure connection . . . if you are using SSL settings (recommended)
- Check the box next to Label incoming messages . . .
- Click Add Account.
- Leave “Yes, I want to be able to send email as . . . ” checked. Click on Next.
- Verify your name is correct, leave the box checked and click on Next Step.
- Now it may ask you for SMTP settings. These are your Outgoing Server Settings, which may be similar or the same as the settings you put in above, except for the port, which will usually be 465.
- Click on Send Verification.
- What happens at this point is it sends an email to your gmail. Open it and click on the link in that email.
And you are done! All of your emails will now show up in your Gmail.
